What will my child learn?

At Summerfields Primary School, all children have access to a wide curriculum which includes English, Maths, Science, ICT, Geography, History, Music, Art, Technology, PSHE and PE.

The Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage class (Year R) builds upon the children's previous experiences and learning within the family and wider community. The school follows the national scheme for Early Learning Goals (ELG's) and the Foundation Stage Curriculum. These refer to:

  • Personal and social development
  • Language and Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical devlopment
  • Creative development.

At all stages and ages we will help the children to:

  • Develop a command of basic English and communicate with others
  • Enjoy reading for pleasure or information
  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of basic mathematical operations including number, measures, shape, algebra and data handling
  • Appreciate and develop skills in creative arts and music
  • Enjoy and become skilled in recreational activities such as sport, drama and dance
  • Become curious about their immediate and wider environment and understand their responsibility to and for it
  • Increase their scientific knowledge and understanding
  • Learn that courtesy, good manners and consideration for others are very important qualities
  • Encourage good health and a positive self image.

Children are grouped by ability for some subjects.

Various teaching methods are used, depending on the task in hand, and these include whole class lessons, children working in separate groups and individual work. Our aim is to help children to learn in an enjoyable and interesting way, but also with minimal waste of time.

How can I help my child to learn?

Every half term, each child takes home a 'Parent Planner' with detailed information about that term's work. Homework may be in the form of collecting information which will be related orally in school, or may be related to topics being studied in class. Parents are encouraged to actively participate in certain areas of homework, to support their child's learning.

Each child is given a blue 'book bag' to keep their homework and reading books clean and dry. Reading books are taken home daily, and we ask that parents hear their child read as often as possible. We have a well-stocked school library, and every child can change their library books each week. We also promote membership of local libraries, and visits are made to Lord Louis Library in Newport to help the children make best use of this wonderful facility.

Weekly spellings are sent home in a list at the beginning of each term. Practising spellings, putting words into context both orally and in written form is very helpful.

Full details of what you child will learn each term are given in the Parent Planner, but if you require any further information please feel free to ask your child's class teacher.

Here are some of the things that the children say about what they learn at school:

  • I love reading. I have lots of books at home and I read every night, and I like being able to take books home from our school library.
  • It's good that we do music in school because on Saturday I have keyboard lessons and it helps me to learn what to do.
  • I love writing my news in Literacy because I always have lots of exciting things to write about.
  • I love doing science because there's lots of new things for us to find out, and we do lots of experiments too.
  • I like doing maths because I normally get all the answers right.
  • I like doing lots of different things in class.
  • We all love doing ICT!
